A steel wheel was used in earlier times to call out the volunteer fire fighters. One of these still stands in front of the Pleasant Hill Fire Station.

WELCOME TO THE SCARBOROUGH FIRE DEPARTMENT

The Scarborough Fire Department provides fire protection, advanced life support emergency medical services, and search and rescue services to the residents and visitors of Scarborough and the ocean waters along our coastline. Deep in tradition, our department started as a volunteer organization in 1914, and has grown to a combination full-time, call, and per-diem department. In fiscal year 2009 we responded to 3,703 calls for service.

ADMINISTRATION

The Administration, which is directed by the Fire Chief and 4 Deputy Chiefs, is responsible for the operation of the Scarborough Fire Department.

SUPPRESSION DIVISION

The Fire Suppression/Operations Division is responsible for the control and extinguishment of fires, as well as mitigating hazardous conditions including an active marine rescue team. The department responds from six neighborhood fire stations, that are equipped with 6 pumpers, 2 ladders, 2 mini-pumpers, and a heavy rescue truck.

EMS DIVISION

The Emergency Medical Services Division is responsible for responding to individuals in need of emergency medical attention. We provide paramedic level advanced life support service including emergency transport to the various local hospitals emergency departments. All EMS personnel are trained as firefighters, and assist the suppression division at fires, unless a citizen or firefighter needs medical attention. EMS also sets up a medical intervention post at major incidents and at our evacuation shelter in case of natural disasters or other emergencies.

FIRE PREVENTION DIVISION

The Fire Prevention Division is responsible for all construction plans reviews, enforcing the town’s fire sprinkler and fire alarm ordinances, and educating the public about fire safety. The Scarborough Fire Department has a detailed commercial site plan and construction permit process. The process forms and applications are available on-line from this site. More information is available on Inspections and Codes and on Public Education.

SPECIALTY TEAMS

Special response teams made up of dedicated members from all divisions of the fire department respond to certain types of calls. These teams include the Extrication Team, HAZ-MAT, the Canteen, Honor Guard, Marine Rescue, and the Arson Investigation Team.

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY

The Scarborough Emergency Management Agency is responsible for managing large scale incidents that threaten the health and welfare of our citizens or damage property. The EMA Office also works with other agencies to insure that the critical infrastructure in town such as roads and bridges, and gas and electric utilities are protected.
